Portuguese Red Sangria

Portuguese Red Sangria

A recipe rooted in tradition, built for sharing. Portugal does sangria with red wine, fortified port, and a touch of aguardente — layers of flavor a lighter sangria doesn't have.

What you'll need

  • 1 bottle Portuguese red wine (Vinho Verde or a Douro red)
  • ½ cup Portuguese aguardente, optional, for extra fortification
  • ¼ cup port wine, ruby or tawny
  • ¼ cup simple syrup, to taste
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 red apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Ice, for serving

How to make it

  1. Wash and slice the fruit.
  2. In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, aguardente, port wine, and simple syrup. Stir well.
  3. Add the sliced fruit and the cinnamon stick.
  4. Refrigerate at least 4 hours. Overnight brings out more flavor.
  5. Fill glasses with ice, pour the sangria over, and serve.

Want it stronger? Add a splash of orange triple sec.
Want it fizzy? Top with lime or lemon seltzer.

Saúde.
